PICTURES: The St Louis tea party protest

Brought to you by Laura Meyer. Laura estimated attendance to be over 500 people, and the Post-Dispatch reported organizer crowd estimates to be 1000+. Suffice to say, I'm impressed.

Stay tuned to the Facebook page associated with the STL Tea Party; there are some fresh pictures showing up there, too.

Update: Gateway Pundit has more on the event.

Update: Hot Air links. Grazie! If you're new here, check out the Culture blog, join the network, and/or read some headlines. I'd recommend doing it all. But that's just me.

Repurblican.com adds Facebook Connect/OpenID comment options

One of the most important things we're trying to do with this site and our Twitter account is to facilitate a conversation. One way to help that is, of course, to make the means for conversing easier. You may have noticed the addition of a Twitter box last week; this most recent rollout, made possible by JS-Kit, complements and improves upon that previous offering. You can comment anonymously, of course.

Please take a test drive. I would love to hear your feedback.

Ouch: National Review calls Arnold "Girly-Man," gives cover treatment

Californians: I don't know much about your guys' budgetary situation out there. Is NR's assertion that Arnold's "ruined the state" fair? Tweet comments welcome.

MO GOP Sen. candidate Roy Blunt launches Twitter, txt updates

Eight Twitter updates in 13 hours. That's pretty impressive for a new user, not to mention that the campaign has built out even more than that technologically -- for example, texting the word "FUTURE" to 97180 gets you Blunt campaign updates to your mobile phone. Toss in that he's already on LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr, and here you have a campaign that's started off on the right foot and taken several steps in the right direction. Great job.

Zinger: American Issues Project releases 60 second ad on stim

    Oh those, yes, porky amendments...

Full disclosure: I may be working with AIP on a project in the future. That said, this ad stands on its own and is backed by nearly a million dollars. You can help keep it up by donating here.

One of the scarier ads you'll see this recession

Roy Blunt to appear at Harris-Stowe for Senate bid kickoff

This was reported earlier today, but I received a confirmation phone call just a couple hours ago. Like I said when Kit Bond bowed out, Blunt would be a formidable candidate in a general election, although there are others who may try to displace him in the GOP primary. (Jim Talent, his seemingly biggest competition, has indicated he won't run for the seat; everyone else is pretty much up in the air.)

So we have Robin Carnahan and Roy Blunt as the party-frontrunners, with a cast of Republicans and Democrats with time still to declare. The prologue continues.

Robin Carnahan and Lacy Clay seen meeting in CWE

Recently-declared candidate for Senate Robin Carnahan and St Louis Congressman Lacy Clay were seen (and by "were seen," I mean "I saw them") in an early-morning breakfast meeting in the Central West End today. With them was a female staffer of no clear affiliation. It can reasonably be assumed that the meeting in part addressed the two politicians' 2010 plans. The three left together, Carnahan, then the staffer, and then Clay.

Will one make a statement about the other shortly? Maybe. Some have suggestesd that Clay might also have designs on the seat to be vacated by Kit Bond. Carnahan may be trying to knock down some hurdles before her most daunting primary competition can set them up.

Will the Carnahan family dynasty be able to muscle the Clay family dynasty into stepping aside?

    Stay tuned.

    Robbing Peter to pay Paul

Today I've had a lot of Facebook friends of the liberal persuasion posting links to this article by Paul Begala. In it Begala says a lot of intellectually dishonest stuff, but this paragraph pretty much sums up his argument:
If Republican politicians are so deeply opposed to President Obama's economic recovery plan, they should refuse to take the money. After all, if you think all that federal spending is damaging, there are easy ways to reduce it: Don't take federal money.
So the government wouldn't spend the money? Ha! I didn't say that, says Begala.
Let's keep our federal money -- give it to states where the governors will actually put it to good use. We'll let Gov. Sanford try his plan, we'll try President Obama's plan.
I could probably write an entire post about this notion of "our federal money" and his evocation of "we," because if he's referring to "we the People's" money, then the people who decline to receive the freshly printed cash should be able to not have their share spent.

Of course, that's exactly what he doesn't have in mind.

Begala's insinuation is that even if you don't want to pay for a debt the government nonetheless incurs -- and that you wanted your representative to vote against -- that you're duty bound to pay for it anyway, and then decline to use what you've been forced to purchase

There are many words for that. I'll let you pick one.

But it also reminds me of a George Bernard Shaw quote. "A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul."

    I'm sure Paul would agree.

St Louis: 21st Ward alderman race gets heated, a police report

Great oogily moogily, this seat isn't going quietly. From challenger Antonio French's website, a press release recounting an encounter with incumbent Bennice Jones King and her husband:
Democratic Committeeman Antonio French, candidate for alderman, today filed a report with the St. Louis Police against Ronald King, the husband of his opponent, 21st Ward Alderwoman Bennice Jones King, after Mr. King threatened French in front of two witnesses.
...Mr. King repeatedly threatened Committeeman French. Alderwoman King got in between Mr. King and Mr. French’s vehicle and tried to calm her husband down as he shouted loudly and repeatedly in the intersection, “I’m going to kick your a**.”

“We’ve been down this road before. It seems like every election, Ms. King’s husband, one of her brothers, or some other family member threatens one of our workers. Back in 2001, they even assaulted one of our campaign workers on Election Day,” said Committeeman French. “Before things got out of hand, I thought it would best to file a complaint with the police.”
Both Dems. Full press release below. Will update if I can find any reports from the Post-Dispatch, but so far, nothing yet.

FRENCH STANDS UP TO THREATS, REFUSES TO BE INTIMIDATED

Democratic Committeeman Antonio French, candidate for alderman, today filed a report with the St. Louis Police against Ronald King, the husband of his opponent, 21st Ward Alderwoman Bennice Jones King, after Mr. King threatened French in front of two witnesses.

“It’s a shame that they feel they must resort to physical threats and intimidation, but if they didn’t know before, they know now that they aren’t dealing with someone who can be so easily intimidated,” said French.

At approximately 3:00 PM Saturday, at the intersection of Taylor and Lee Ave, a white SUV driven by Mr. King cut off French and stopped him from proceeding along Taylor. Mrs. King exited the vehicle and came over to French’s vehicle.

“Mrs. King was calm and polite. She wanted to discuss why people she thought were her supporters had decided to support me instead,” said Committeeman French. “It was when her husband exited the vehicle that things became less civil.”

Mr.

The police called King and her husband down to the station, where he was questioned and served with a summons.

“As we enter the last two weeks of this campaign, I want to make clear to the voters of the 21st Ward that if you stand with me and say ‘NO’ to the corruption, dirty politics, threats and intimidation, then in just 16 short days we can bring THE CHANGE WE NEED to the 21st Ward after 16 long years,” said French.

    ###
Update: The Post-Dispatch says today that summonses have been given to both the husband and to French over the incident.
